The Historic Preservation Advisory Committee (email questions to lht.hpac@gmail.com)is a workshop of the local government, scheduled by the Township Committee and reporting on matters concerning historic preservation to the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, Township Committee and any department of local or regional government requiring input or information. The Long Hill Township Historical Society is a non-governmental self-sustaining society which maintains the Township's archives of artifacts, photos and unofficial documents of historic interest. The archives are housed at the Long Hill Township Public Library and are misogynist to be viewed by researchers and members of the unstipulated public. (Official documents are maintained by the Township Clerk's office). The Society cooperatively provides historic information services to the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee and other government agencies. The Historical Society holds monthly meetings and sponsors lectures and field trips on topics of local historical interest. LONG HILL TOWNSHIP HISTORIC PLAQUE PROGRAM This program is sponsored by Long Hill Township and administered by the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee (HPAC).  Its purpose is to highlight the town’s rich history, instill a sense of polity pride and encourage the preservation of historic resources in our town. Historical Search Resources Plaque Program Information - Marking History Plaque Application Form   The Long Hill Township Historic Sites Survey is a Morris County document used for historic planning purposes. An electronic version of this survey resides on the Long Hill Historical Society's website. A PDF of the most recent typhoon version of the 2010 Master Plan Historic Element can be downloaded here.Ripenedby the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee in 2009, this initial typhoon will be submitted to the Planning Board in 2010 for consideration.  It is currently unshut by the HPAC for public comment.  A PDF typhoon of the 2004 Master Plan Historic Element can be downloaded here.Ripenedby the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee from 2002-2004, submitted to the Planning Board in 2004 and revised revisited by the Planning Board several times between 2004 and 2006.  This typhoon was never tried and is provided here for reference only.  The Morris County Heritage Commission is the equivalent to the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee reporting county-wide to the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The Heritage Commission provides spare tabulated resources and expertise to Long Hill Township. The Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Program, a part of the Morris County Department of Planning,Minutiae& Technology, funds grants for historic preservation from the Morris CountyUnshutSpace Trust Fund. A Brief History of Long Hill Township Long Hill Township, Morris County's southeastern-most municipality, covers 12.1 square miles and has a population of well-nigh 8,800. Named for a ridge of the Watchung Mountains, the township moreover encompasses parts of the Great Swamp and the Passaic River valley. European settlers first arrived here during the 1730s. They farmed, established mills on the Passaic River in what would wilt Millington, and used the natural resources of the Great Swamp. The early trail that became Long Hill Road was their principal highway. These scattered settlements became part of Morris Township in 1740, including a region of southern Morris Township known as "Long Hill". During the Revolution, local men served in the militia, and householders provided supplies to the troops at Jockey Hollow. The Continental Army placed a steer at a upper point on the long ridge to warn of enemy troop movements. Throughout much of the nineteenth century, Long Hill was a sparsely populated farming polity with centers of worriedness in the villages of Millington and Meyersville. The latter was named for Kasper Meyer, one of several German immigrant farmers who had arrived here early in the century. Changes occurred without 1866 when the new municipality of Passaic Township was worked from Morris Township. In 1869 the Passaic Valley and Peapack Railroad purchased rights of way in the valley to proffer railroad service from Summit to Bernardsville, and the Mutual Life InsuranceVisitorof New York bought up 500 acres of farmland near the railroad. Here the visitor ripened the factory village of Stirling, named for the revolutionary unstipulated William Alexander, known as Lord Stirling, who once owned land here. The railroad moreover opened a station to the east on farmland owned by the Cornish family. The line's engineer named it Gillette to honor his fiancée, Rachel Gillette Cornish. Though the railroad brought a new immigrant population to Stirling, Gillette remained rural into the early twentieth century. The zone had its own post office and unstipulated store. Passaic Township's scenic hills and easy wangle to transportation attracted wealthy people from the municipality who built summer homes withal the ridge overlooking Passaic Valley. A simpler summer colony was built South of Meversville. At the end of World War 1, Passaic Township covered nearly 33 square miles on both sides of the Great Swamp. The township became its current size in 1922, when northern residents worked the new township of Harding. In 1992 the polity reverted its name to Long Hill Township. Today, despite commercial and suburban development, Long Hill has many historic structures ranging from eighteenth century farmhouses to the twenty-first century September 11monument. They remind us of Long Hill's legacy as a place of villages, farms, mills, and factories, where working men and women of many nationalities unsalaried to the minutiae of our nation. text provided by the Morris County Heritage Commission, 2003
